Teen Musical Workshop

Students in grades 7-12

 

This 2-day workshop helps teens take a song they know and love, and turn it into a polished performance! Workshop participants will work with acting coach (Terra Stark) and vocal coach (Wendy Byrnes) to dig into aspects of technique, characterization and artistry. This workshop is perfect for preparing for an audition or performance, or for aspiring performers who want to get more comfortable with being onstage. The workshop will culminate in a small showcase performance at McPhetres hall on the afternoon of Sunday, March 15th.

The Instructors:

Terra Stark (acting coach)

​Terra Stark has worked with youth and /or in education with nearly every job she’s ever had. Besides 20+ years in independent schools in southern California, teaching primarily 2nd/3rd grade multi-age classes, Terra has run after-school performing arts programs and camps, directed school plays involving dozens and dozens of kids, performed in Juneau with Theater Alaska, Theatre in the Rough, Perseverance Theatre, Ghostlight Theater's InsomniActs, and Northern Lights Junior Theatre, and has spent much of the last four years creating place-based programming for elementary-aged children in her beloved home, Tlingit Aani. Terra is especially excited to collaborate in artistic endeavors with youth!

Wendy Byrnes (vocal coach)

Wendy Byrnes holds a Bachelors of Music in Vocal Performance from Pacific Lutheran University, and has trained in opera, musical theatre, and contemporary/commercial singing techniques. She is a regularly featured soloist with many of Juneau’s arts organizations, and has a wealth of experience providing  vocal coaching to kids and adults in preparation for performances, productions, and auditions. She is a middle school teacher and loves helping Juneau’s next generation of performers engage with the arts.

 

Laurie Clough (accompanist)

Laurie Clough taught music in the Juneau Schools for 29 years. She was the Juneau School District Teacher of the Year in 1999. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from Whitman College, where her primary instrument was organ. She plays organ for 2 local churches as well as playing the Kimball Theatre Organ at the State Office Building. For the last 20 years she has been a regular accompanist for the Southeast Alaska High School Music Fest.  She loves working with young musicians and watching them gain confidence as performers.
